Aromatherapy and Anxiety

Aromatherapy and Anxiety-Does it really help?

Posted on January 24, 2020February 28, 2020

Hello, I myself have searched the internet on aromatherapy and anxiety, and if using aromatherapy can actual help your anxiety. I have found through my life experiences that for me aromatherapy really does help reduce stress, anxiety, and help you relax. There has been scientific studies and research done to confirm this. I personally use aromatherapy to help me get into a good mood before meditation. I also like to have a aromatherapy diffuser going at work in the office just to help stay relaxed.

How scents affect your mood

Scents really do affect your mood but not the way you would think. In order for a smell to have an effect you, you have to have had an experience associated with it in some sort of way. This is a learned behavior that most humans developed as children.

So Let’s say one of your happiest memories was your 10th birthday and it was at a pizza place, your mind would associate the smell of pizza with that memory of you being happy, therefore the smell of pizza would put you in a good mood because of how your mind associates the smell with the memory.

I know for me the smell of apple pie reminds me of being back at home as a child because it was something my mom always cooked.  It is one of my wonderful memories I have as child. The apple pie smell is just a trigger when I smell it I automatically think about those childhood memories.

So this learned behavior is a way that smells can help you get into a great mood. This is the method I used to get myself into a great mood before I meditate or if I find myself in a not so great mood, I just turn on my aromatherapy diffuser and the smell makes me have happy thoughts, it helps me to put a smile on my face and gets me out of a bad mood.

Aromatherapy and Anxiety-Benefits of aromatherapy

Aromatherapy can give you relief from anxiety, depression, and help you sleep better. You ever wonder why that nighttime baby lotion has lavender in it. It’s because the smell is calming and makes you sleep better. Night time baby lotion is a form of aromatherapy. I have done research on sleep and human sleep cycles and it is known that not sleeping good or having an irregular sleep cycle can lead to multiple health problems.

So getting adequate sleep is huge factor in being healthy. So this, in my opinion is the number one benefit to aromatherapy. Turn on your aromatherapy diffuser and sleep with it running all night to ensure you get a good night of sleep. Getting plenty sleep will dramatically change how good you feel and your mood. Different oils and their uses

Different oils has been used for years for many things, I’m going to list a few and their benefits.

Eucalyptus oil- It is a very popular and widely used oil in aromatherapy. This oil was originally used for an analgesic agent and helped relieved pain. Eucalyptus oil is believed to be the most effective against respiratory problems like cold, cough, flu, asthma, and copd.

This oil will really open up your nasal passages and help you breathe better. It can help you sleep better by helping you breathe better. It can also help you breathe better if you have allergies by helping reduce inflammatory in your nasal passage.

Lavender oil- Lavender oil is a natural anxiety treatment, it calms you down and aids in sleep. When breathed in it soothes and relaxes you. It can also be used to help headaches and minor pains from burns or bites when applied to the skin.

I have just listed a few of the most popular scents. There are 100’s more to choose from.

Finding your scent

When, I first started aromatherapy I spent a lot of money testing out oils trying to find one that I really like. Some of these oils are not cheap and I bought some that I didn’t even like. I just started buying everything that sounded good to me.

Don’t make a huge newbie mistake like me and waste your money on scents that you don’t even like. Some companies will provide you with a sample pack that come with 5-6 scents for under $10. This way you can try it before you buy a huge bottle of it and don’t like it.

Start smelling the bliss

If you have not tried it I can say that aromatherapy has actually helped me and I will continue to use it. If you’re wanting to try it I suggest starting off with a smaller less efficient aromatherapy diffuser, and if you get hooked like me then you can upgrade to a unit that will work up to 1000+ square feet and fill your whole house, lol.

I know aromatherapy is a big thing right now, but I’ve never tried it myself. I know that lavender is a calming smell, but you really peaked my interest with the Eucalyptus oil in helping with allergies, as I suffer from them every spring and fall. I’ll have to check into this more, as I am always looking for natural ways to deal with my allergies.
