Meditation Garden Ideas-Simply Build your own garden!

Posted on January 20, 2020March 16, 2020

Hello how are you, glad to be writing on meditation garden ideas today. Gardening can be a very fun hobby it can definitely help you relax, get your mind off your every day routine, focus on a particular thing, and ultimately lower stress. Gardening can also be rewarding if your growing plants that are edible. Me personally just getting home and going out to the garden pulling some weeds, tilling the ground, and water plants takes my mind away from the normal stresses of my job and responsibilities. I know it sounds like work, but it can be refreshing to your mind.

What are meditation gardens or zen gardens

A zen garden originated in japan in the 14th century along the time that zen Buddhism was a big influence. The gardens where designed with rocks placed around and a few plants. The idea was to harmonize yourself with nature or the universe.

Zen garden is also a place to go meditate and contemplate. Whenever you first start it takes focus and harmony to rake the sand into perfect proportions. This zen garden design is also beautiful and relaxing just to look at. It has remained popular even today.

You don’t even need sand if you don’t want I personally find it very relaxing to rake the sand into cool looking designs, but just having a place to go meditate outside in nature will help you relax and deepen your meditations. Sometimes I like to just have a place to go for, “me time”. A place I can go and set and look at the beauty of nature and just relax.

Some Meditation garden ideas

If you just want to make a small garden in your backyard. First get some black plastic, you can get this online, or from a local home and garden store. Lay it down in the area you want to make your garden and cut it to the size of garden you want. Get some railroad ties or bricks of your choice and make a foundation around the edges of your black plastic. We are basically making a sandbox.

Then you’ll need to decide what plants you want and where you want to put them. I like the small shrubs that don’t get too big, and only would use 1 or 2 to leave enough space for some good size rocks. Once you got your plants and know where you want to put them cut small circles in the plastic, where the plants are going, and plant the plants in the ground.

Now you are going to have to add enough sand to fill up your garden, I get the sandbox sand from your local store. Depending on where you live you can search the area and get some local rocks or find a store that sells them. Get the rocks of your choice and place them where you like. Then get your self a zen garden rake and you have you very own back yard zen garden. Click here for more ideas.

Adding a fishpond

A home made fishpond in the middle of your garden adds a whole new level to the appearance and beauty of your garden. Using the same techniques as above it is very simple and cheap to add a small pond. First just dig a small hole in the ground the size you want the pond.

Line the pond with the black plastic sheet. If you just want a really small pond you can actually just make one out of a 5 gallon bucket. I have made several out of a bucket, but I don’t live at those houses anymore and I wish I had a picture of them.Place rocks all around the edge of the pond. This will hold the black plastic or bucket in place and hide it. Now pick a spot you would like to have a waterfall.

Stack up a bunch of rocks to make a waterfall. Place a water pump at the bottom of the pond, have the hose coming from it hidden under the rocks you stacked up for the water fall. This will recirculate the water providing oxygen for the fish. On one that I made, on top of the rocks I stacked up for the waterfall I place a plant pot that had a cool design on top of the rocks.

The planting pot is the kind with the hole in the bottom. I laid the pot sideways facing the pond. I ran the hose inside the pot. I then put river rocks inside the pot to hide the hose. The water looked as if it was flowing out the pot down the waterfall.

Just build it and the ideas will come

I have listed some techniques I have used to build a nice, small, beautiful garden for meditating. I like to put a nice little bench in the middle of my garden so I have a place to sit and meditate. So you can plan out exactly what you want your garden to look like, but for me, once I just get out there and start building it, that’s when the ideas really start flowing. I usually have a general idea of where it’s going to be, and how big, but I get the best ideas when I’m actually in the process of doing it.

I was in Japan for a couple of weeks and was able to travel the country and see some of the most amazing shrines and gardens.  Just amazing and your site brought back so many memories.  I would love to build a meditation garden in my backyard and have more than just a few statues 🙂  It looks fairly straightforward and I think your diagrams are very helpful.  Have an escape in my yard will be great for both my emotional and physical state.  Any particular type of fish for the pond? I know that many use Koi fish but I am not sure that is a good idea.

I live in Oklahoma and it can get cold. Ive always had good luck with just gold fish and they come in all sorts of colors. The bigger you make the pond the bigger gold fish will get. The smaller one I made out of a bucket I had no fish in it. It was mainly for looks and the waterfall. The sound of water helps to relax me. I would love to visit and see some meditation gardens in Japan. I think the statues and benches are my favorite.

With the things going on in the world today, meditation gardens are extremely necessary. I’ve heard of meditation gardens before and would like to create my own, but never really thought about the best way to start building one. Your article gives great ideas on how I can put one in my backyard. I would like to get a pond in the back that might be a stepping stone for adding a waterfall later one. Do you have a meditation garden similar in style to the Zen garden pictured in your article? Do you feel much more relaxed in your life because of a meditation garden?

I do, I just have a rock and sand garden at the moment. I can use it year round and I dont have plants in it that will die in the winter. Yes it is very relaxing, even if you dont meditate, gardening can be a great get away to go outside and get some, “me time. I also like adding some nice benches and statues to give it that traditional look. If you want to go with the sand and rock garden raking your sand with zen garden rake can be very relaxing. I like to mess the sand up and rake it making different designs in the sand.

Yes I agree it is very beneficial and can help lower stress. You dont have to actually meditate to relax with gardening. Just focusing on raking the sand or pulling the weeds and being out there in your garden focusing on it is a form of meditation, but it is a great place to do your meditations.

Does plants meditation  help to relieve worries?

Yes it does, one of the oldest methods of relaxation and ways of harmonizing the mind and body is meditation. Plants for meditation can enhance the therapeutic experience of being outdoors and open up a space to allow your mind to clear from thoughts and worries. The first steps to making an outdoor meditation garden space are to declutter. If there are numerous trees that block the light and bring in shadows, clear limbs or even have one or two removed to bring in light and air. Consider the view you will have as you sit in contemplation and the sounds that you will hear as you control your breathing. Construsting your garden as explained in this article is another lovely step to use. For me going to view my meditating garden is a very relieving thing for me, thought maintaining the place is a bit stressful but most importantly it help to relieve me of troubles and  worries and I love my garden.

    Thanks for this article.
